As another academic year ends, Chester Pride is celebrating the continued success of its LGBTQ+ School Nurture Project, delivered in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Youth Service.
Originally launched as a pilot to provide safe, inclusive lunchtime spaces for LGBTQ+ young people and their allies, the project has gone from strength to strength. With funding from the Youth Opportunities Grant, throughout the year, students have come together to build confidence, create friendships, celebrate diversity and develop a genuine sense of belonging within their schools.
The impact of the project has been recognised not only by the young people attending but also by school staff. In a recent letter of appreciation, Rudheath Senior Academy described the programme as providing:
“A safe, inclusive and welcoming space where young people have felt empowered to be themselves, build meaningful friendships, and experience understanding, acceptance and belonging.”
The school also praised the way young people were encouraged to shape the sessions themselves, helping to create a lasting culture of inclusion across the wider school community. Their Rainbow Rhombus banner, proudly displayed in the school canteen, now serves as a visible reminder that equality, respect and belonging are values to be celebrated every day.
Perhaps the greatest measure of success comes from the hope that this work will continue. In their closing words, the school shared:
“The support you have provided has had a lasting and meaningful impact, and we sincerely hope to have the opportunity to work with you again in September.”
We’re delighted that September is already shaping up to continue from where we left off. One secondary school is joining the project for the first time, alongside two local colleges who are continuing in the programme. This expansion reflects a growing recognition of the importance of creating safe, supportive environments where every young person can thrive.
As demand continues to grow, we remain committed to working alongside schools, colleges and young people to ensure that every student feels seen, valued and able to be their authentic self.
